Anne Lederman

Canada | Vivant à Toronto mais originaire du Manitoba, violoneuse, chanteuse et compositeur, elle est fortement enracinée dans plusieurs traditions musicales canadiennes, Métis et Franco-Canadienne, Ecossaise, Irlandaise, européenne et africaine. Elle a commencé sa carrière professionnelle en tant que violoneuse vers la fin des années 70. En 1985 et ‘86, elle est revenue au Manitoba pour faire l’étude et la recherche sur la musique des premières nations et sur les violoneux Métis. Elle a produit un document CD exceptionnel sur cette tradition de violon Métis. Elle a poursuivi son travail avec le groupe Izvor, un ensemble consacré aux musiques des Balkans, de la Grèce et de d’autres traditions est-européennes.

Originally from Manitoba, fiddler-singer-composer Anne Lederman is strongly rooted in several Canadian musical traditions, old and new : Métis and French-Canadian, Scots-Irish, Eastern European and African. She sings in several languages and, in addition to her fiddling and singing, also plays mandolin, piano, bones, feet, jawharp and more.

Les Charbonniers de l’enfer

Québec | Les Charbonniers s’enflamment depuis 10 ans, calcinant les planches des salles de spectacles à travers le Québec. C’est une des rares formations québécoises a capella spécialisées dans la recherche et l’interprétation du répertoire de tradition orale. Au rythme des voix, s’ajoute le tapement de pieds. Un groupe de chanteurs a cappella, ils ne jouent donc d’aucun instrument. Le groupe est formé de cinq chanteurs (Michel Bordeleau, Michel Faubert, André Marchand, Jean-Claude Mirandette, Normand Miron) d’expérience qui ont développé une complicité harmonique bien de chez nous. L’originalité de leur démarche est marquée par leur sens de l’actualisation du répertoire qui assure, parallèlement, la continuité d’un patrimoine chanté.

Les Charbonniers de L’Enfer have been burning the boards of venues all over Québec for the past 10 years. The group is formed of five veterans (Michel Bordeleau, Michel Faubert, André Marchand, Jean-Claude Mirandette, Normand Miron) who have developed a truly Québécois harmonic complicity and original approach that perfectly respects its roots.

À l’image de la musique qu’ils jouent avec passion, Kleztory forme une riche mosaïque de cultures, de formations et de sensibilités musicales. En unissant leurs forces, ces musiciens expérimentés recréent la virtuosité et l’émotion propres au style. Ils proposent une démarche singulière, créant des arrangements à la fois novateurs et respectueux de la tradition, ainsi que des compositions originales.

Klezmer is the traditional music of nomadic Jewish musicians who traveled throughout Eastern Europe in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. These musicians took inspiration from the popular music of the day and integrated their own unique vocabulary, born from a history that was rich and too often tragic. Similar to the music they perform, Kleztory is a rich mosaic of cultures (Russian, Canadian, Quebecois and French), musical training (academic and self taught) and musical tastes (classical, contemporary, jazz, blues, country and folk). Combining their talents, these five musicians perform with an emotion and a virtuosity that is the true spirit of klezmer. Through the use of innovative arrangements that are respectful of the original compositions, Kleztory has forged a unique, yet still authentic musical path.

Deviating from the Danish tradition, their music uses its roots to generate modern modes inspired by jazz, classical and world/folk.

Dentdelion

Québec | Actif dans le milieu depuis plus de trente ans, Claude Méthé a été un des membres fondateurs du légendaire groupe Le Rêve du diable, lauréat d’un Félix en 1983 pour le meilleur album traditionnel. Claude s’est produit au Canada, aux É.-U. et en Europe avec plusieurs groupes, dont Jeter le pont, Dent-de-lion, Manigance, Ni sarpe ni branche, Entourloupe… En 2006, son premier CD solo, L’Amant confesseur, a été mise en nomination au Prix de musique folk canadienne dans la catégorie “Meilleur album trad”. Le disque met en valeur ses compositions originales au violon qui seront la base du répertoire présenté au festival par Claude Méthé et son ensemble (Denise Levac à la flûte, Dana Whittle à la guitare, aux pieds et à la voix), avec la participation spéciale de la jeune rélève (Colin Savoie-Levac - mandoline, banjo, pieds et voix; Béatrix Méthé - violon et voix).

Svart Kaffe

Suède | Mix French accordion moustaches and West-Swedish fiddle tradition with song, harmonica and mandola to get Svart Kaffe, Swedish folk music in a traditional and modern style. Louise Schultz plays the fiddle and sings in Swedish. Since graduating from Music Academy in 1998 Louise has worked as a traditional singer and fiddler. As well as working with Svart Kaffe she is half of the duo Susanne & Louise and is active with the folk group RÅmantik. She also participates in various theatrical performances. Simon Stålspets plays the guitar, nordic mandola and harmonica. After graduating in electric guitar and classical composition at the Royal Collage of Music in 2000 Simon plays in the folk groups Stockholm Lisboa Project, Lystra och Gravity. The founder of Svart Kaffe, Jean-Pierre Yvert plays the accordion, willow flutes and sanza. Jean-Pierre, French born and bred, has over the years become something of an ambassador for Swedish folk music in France. In October 2004 he moved to Sweden. Jean-Pierre is also part of the group Nord-Sud and works with the story teller Annie Gallay.

Gamaltnymalt

Norvège | Sigrid Moldesstad, Einar Mjolnes, Hakon Hogemo, ont reçu le prix de la musique norvégienne le “Grammy” norvégien, “Spellemannpris 2005″ pour leur disque “Gamalnymalt”. Ces trois violoneux exceptionnels renouvellent la tradition en quelque chose de neuf. Gamaltnymalt, est un jeu de mot : réinventer le vieux par le renouveau. Ces trois instrumentistes transportent le violon Hardanger dans une nouvelle dimension par une recherche sonore unique grâce aux cordes sympathiques de cet instrument. Ils modifient aussi la tradition, passant d’un violon seul à un trio.

Three outstanding fiddlers developing traditions into something real new. Gamaltnymalt, a play on words contrasting the old with the new, represents a commercial counterweight to what is called the “Bergen wave” on today’s Norwegian music scene. These three outstanding instrumentalists transport the Hardanger fiddle into a new dimension. The sound produced by the trios 5-string Hardanger fiddles is powerful, and is in itself a unique contribution to the history of the instrument in Norway. The members of the trio spend a great deal of time colouring traditional tunes and compositions with the right hues. In their search for the sounds that are found somewhere between the upper strings and the sympathetic strings, they bring the music into a more potent landscape. They lift the traditions of the instrument as an individualistic performance medium (solo playing) into a new sphere.

Genticorum

Québec | Bien ancré dans la tradition québécoise, le groupe témoigne du dynamisme actuel des musiques folk nord-américaines et européennes. Entremêlant flûte traversière en bois, violon, guitare acoustique, guimbarde, basse, pieds et harmonies vocales, le trio propose chansons et mélodies traditionnelles ainsi que compositions originales. Depuis ses débuts en 2000, Genticorum s’est taillé une place de choix dans le réseau des festivals, salles de spectacles et veillées de danse au Québec, au Canada, aux États-Unis et en Europe. En 2006, le groupe s’est également produit en Malaisie, en Australie, en Nouvelle-Zélande, en Israël et en Égypte. Gagnant du Prix de musique folk canadienne 2005 dans la catégorie «Meilleur ensemble»; mise en nomination pour un FÉLIX et un Prix JUNO en 2006.

Alasdair Fraser + Natalie Haas

Écosse-États-Unis | «Ils apportent un son rafraîchissant à la musique traditionnelle» Ce duo est composé du maître du violon écossais et de la jeune virtuose américaine du violoncelle Nathalie Haas. Leur rencontre est une explosion de créativité entre le grand et le petit violon, et met en valeur la musique écossaise du 18e siècle ainsi que leurs créations contemporaines actuelles. Ils font preuve de prouesse technique et d’une maîtrise de leur instrument respectif et d’un dynamisme sans égal.

Master Scottish fiddler Alasdair Fraser is a consummate performer. His dynamic fiddling, engaging stage presence, and deep understanding of Scotland’s music have created a constant and international demand for his solo appearances and concerts with a variety of ensembles. Alasdair has been a major force behind the resurgence of traditional Scottish fiddling in his homeland and the U.S., inspiring legions of listeners and learners through his recordings, annual fiddle camps, and concerts. He has represented Scotland internationally through performances sponsored by the British Council, and has been awarded touring support by the California Arts Council, with the ranking of “highest priority for inclusion on the roster; considered ‘model’ in stature.” Vibrant young cellist Natalie Haas is already a seasoned performer, recording artist, and teacher. She has joined master Scottish fiddler Alasdair Fraser for festival and concert appearances in Scotland, Spain, France, and throughout the U.S., including Celtic Connections Festival in Glasgow, Scotland, the Festival Interceltique de Lorient in France, and the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington, D.C. “People may be familiar with the gorgeous, melodic cello sound,” says Fraser, “but they’re surprised to learn that the cello used to comprise the rhythm section in Scottish dance bands. Natalie Haas unleashes textures and deep, powerful rhythms that drive fiddle tunes. We can “duck and dive” around each other, swap melody and harmony lines, and improvise on each other’s rhythmic riffs. She has such a great sense of exploration and excitement for the music; it’s a joy to play with her!”

Lepistö + Lehti

Finlande | Traduction à venir. Sometimes music just happens. A warm late summer night in 2004 at the Helsinki festival was one of those occasions. Lepistö&Lehti, a duo of Finnish master musicians debuted at the main stage of the event and the 1000+ audience listened in awe. Perhaps there’s something surprising about the composition of this ensemble. Double bass and accordion, it seems, is not the most obvious of combinations. Yet Markku Lepistö and Pekka Lehti pull it off somehow. Markku Lepistö was born in Kuortane, South Ostrobothnia, in December, 1963. The region is renowned for its age-old folk music tradition, skilled folk fiddlers and accordionists. Inspired by the strong heritage and his fiddle-playing father Markku started playing the accordion by ear at the age of five, first on the piano accordion and later on the button accordion. At the age of eleven he began his actual music studies in accordion playing and subsequentely also in piano playing. Besides folk music Markku soon got interested in dance music, too, and thus he assembled his own dance band when still sixteen. One of Finland’s top bassist, Pekka Lehti earned his reputation in the rock music world in the eighties before joining Värttinä in the nineties and then leaving them in 2002. Folk music and its extensions remain a very important part of Lehti’s musical life and his solo album Outo voima, feturing collaborations with some of his favourite palyers, is a perfect place to start exploring that life. Lehti, who runs his own record label Aito records, has also produced albums by Värttinä, Markku Lepistö, Korpi ensemble, Tarujen saari and Sari Kaasinen. He is now concentrating to Dalindeo and his band Outo voima, while producing and composing film music
